Blessing Future Generations
Most people have received "instructions for life" from our families such as: "be responsible", "be nice", "work hard", and "support your family."
While instructions like these communicate one's values, conveying your values as "blessings" delivers a deeper message of love and caring to loved ones. You can offer the wisdom of your life experience by transforming instructions into blessings.
When you say a blessing aloud, it sounds more like a heartfelt gift than an instruction -- personal and honest, not indirect or manipulative. A blessing imparts your values and wisdom in ways that touch the heart -- deeply connecting the person receiving the blessing with your truest hopes for their future.
Take time to reflect on how you want to bless loved ones who survive you:
Part 1:
Write a list of "instructions for living" that have been most important in your life. Narrow the list to what you consider the three most essential instructions. For example: Take time for solitude. Keep learning. Live peacefully.
Part 2:
For each of your three instructions, write them as a blessing. Begin with opening words such as:
~ May your life be blessed . . .
~ May you always be blessed . . .
~ May God (or your Creator or Higher Power) bless you with . . .
Example:
INSTRUCTION: Take time for solitude.
BLESSING: May your life be blessed with solitude and silence that nurtures your spirit -- allowing you to hear your
inner voice and speak your truth to others.
